How does the body use collagen to help the skin?
Once absorbed through the small intestine, collagen peptides and free amino acids travel through the bloodstream to various parts of the body, including the dermis (the deepest layer of the skin) where research in animal models have shown they can remain for up to 14 days. Several studies have shown that collagen peptides can be efficiently absorbed and distributed to the skin, where they can stimulate fibroblasts (specialised cells in connective tissue) to increase the density and diameter of collagen fibres, as well as increase hyaluronic acid production and protect against UVA radiation.

Here they are broken down into smaller particles (dipeptides and tripeptides) and free amino acids where they can then be absorbed and distributed throughout the body via the bloodstream.
